DIY vs. Hiring a Contractor: My 5-Day Home Project Experience
January is often a slower time for the housing market, and with some downtime on my hands, I decided to take on a project I had been contemplating for a while—painting the ceiling, walls, and trim of our first floor. Initially, we considered hiring a painter to speed things up, but I opted to tackle it myself. What started as a straightforward painting project evolved into a comprehensive home maintenance endeavor.
The Painting Journey
Painting isn’t exactly my favorite activity, but I knew it was something I could manage. Over five days, I worked through each surface, giving the ceiling, walls, and trim a fresh coat. The process was time-consuming, but the results were rewarding. Each stroke erased colors we no longer enjoyed.
Tackling Minor Maintenance
While painting, I seized the opportunity to address several minor maintenance tasks:
• Home Media Center: I detailed the home media center by tidying up the wires and installing a shelf for fans behind the TV. This keeps the media components cool when we use the fireplace.
• Electrical Fixes: One outlet gave a reading of open neutral, which, upon further evaluation, turned out to be a damaged outlet. Replacing it was a simple yet essential safety fix.
• Cleaning the Blinds: Although we regularly wipe down our blinds, removing them from the brackets revealed an astonishing amount of hidden fuzz. A deep clean was long overdue.
• Appliance Maintenance: I took the time to clean behind the refrigerator, vacuum out the compressor, and clean behind the stove and the range exhaust. These are areas that often get overlooked but are crucial for efficient appliance operation.
• Decluttering: Lastly, we decluttered items we found ourselves constantly moving to clean around but rarely enjoyed. This step not only made our space more functional but also more enjoyable.
The Benefits of DIY
While the project consumed a significant chunk of time, it was incredibly fulfilling. We spent approximately $350 of our 2025 maintenance budget. We stayed on budget by having most of the supplies on hand except the paint. In addition to financial savings, there’s a unique satisfaction in knowing you’ve contributed to the upkeep and improvement of your home. Hiring a contractor to paint we would have still needed to address the cleaning and maintenance items or hire additional contractors to complete the tasks.
Conclusion
Though I don’t particularly enjoy painting, I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from maintaining and improving our home. This project was a reminder of the value of routine maintenance and the joy of seeing tangible results from your efforts. Whether you decide to DIY or hire a contractor, the key is finding what works best for your situation and enjoying the process along the way.
